96 my appointact, which it should be remembered, were conducted largely with a view to my urgent departure for Hong Kong. Considerable delay having taken place in making the appointment, and, as I was advised by letter from the Crown Agents before the appointment was signed my departure was urgent to the Colony.
The details of my appointment were all verbally arranged with Mr. Chadwick, C.B., C.M.G., and as he is, so far as I was concerned, represented the Government, I submit I was justified in placing full weight on the following opinions formed on the information I received during the interview.
The gentleman referred to (Mr. Chadwick) had only just returned from Hong Kong, and being fully aware of the qualifications necessary for the post, the Crown Agents asked him, and he had consented to interview likely persons, with a view to recommending a suitable man. I was one of those interviewed, and was ultimately recommended by Mr. Chadwick, and appointed by the Crown Agents.
15. In answer to my questions during the interview, I was informed that the salary would be equal to between £4000 and £5000 a year, but at least £4000 a year, and also that although I would be required to sign a three years' agreement, the appointment was not necessarily for three years.
